The why behind it

It started with confidence.
Then, a closet.

01

The confidence piece

Throughout middle school, I struggled with confidence in my own body and with the immaturity that can make those years especially difficult for girls. Looking back, I wanted to create the kind of space I would have valued at that age: somewhere younger girls could hear from older female mentors, ask honest questions, receive advice, and know they were not alone.

That became the idea behind the Empowerment Station — a place centered on encouragement, conversation, and women supporting girls through a stage of life that can feel isolating.

02

The closet that sparked the boutique

One day, my mom made me clean out my closet. As I sorted through clothing I no longer needed, I realized how common this must be among privileged teenage girls in my area — perfectly good clothes sitting unused or being discarded without much thought.

I started spreading the word among local high schools and turned that realization into action. The result: more than 400 articles of clothing collected for girls at the TGR Learning Lab.

“I wanted every girl to leave feeling powerful, womanly, strong, and part of a bigger, amazing community of women.”

The mission

More than a clothing drive.

EmpowerHER Boutique combined donated fashion and accessories with mentorship, beauty stations, creativity, and confidence-building. The goal was not simply to give girls something to take home — it was to create an afternoon where they could feel seen, supported, and celebrated.

Partnership & leadership

Turning an idea into a real collaboration.

01

Built the partnership

Established a partnership with the TGR Foundation to create and execute an event for under-resourced girls in Philadelphia.

02

Brought TGR into Shipley

Coordinated a speaker event at Shipley High School with TGR Director Maria Stroup, including a student Q&A on March 25.

03

Designed the experience

Planned seven clothing tables, one jewelry table, two dress racks, and three activity stations — Glam, Kindness, and Empowerment — with signage, labels, decorations, supplies, and structured rotations.

04

Led the people

Coordinated more than 25 volunteers while 5th- and 6th-grade girls rotated through 30-minute sets at each section.

Behind the boutique

400+ pieces,
one by one.

The boutique looked polished on event day, but the preparation happened long before anyone walked through the doors. Every donation had to be collected, folded, separated, and organized by size and category.

This photo captures the less glamorous part of the project: donated clothing taking over my house while I worked through stacks and stacks to get everything event-ready.

The work behind the sparkle mattered just as much as the sparkle itself. ✦

PR & social media

Building the buzz.

I developed the campaign around EmpowerHER Boutique — creating promotional posters, building an Instagram presence, recruiting volunteers, and spreading the word about clothing and jewelry donations.

A social identity for the event.

The Instagram extended the campaign beyond posters, creating a recognizable look and a home for volunteer calls, event information, and the message at the center of the project: Donate • Volunteer • Empower.

Coming October 16, 2026

EmpowerHER is growing.

After the success of the first EmpowerHER Boutique, we are coming back bigger than ever. This year's event will be nearly double the size, with twice the clothing donations, twice the volunteers, and even more opportunities to support young students.

New this year

Empowerment for everyone.

For the first time, EmpowerHER is expanding to include a Boys Empowerment Boutique, giving boys the opportunity to shop donated clothing and take part in an experience focused on confidence, connection, and community.

We are also welcoming students from Temple University who specialize in supporting young people with anxiety. They will talk with students about navigating anxiety and the challenges of middle school, while sharing advice and strategies they can carry with them beyond the event.

Event day

Then it all came to life.

After the partnership-building, collecting, folding, recruiting, posting, planning, decorating, labeling, and organizing, EmpowerHER Boutique became a real space for girls to shop, create, connect, and be encouraged.

What I learned

I don’t want to just have ideas.
I want to act on them.

EmpowerHER Boutique reflects the kind of person I want to keep becoming: someone who notices a need, imagines a way to help, and then does the work to make it real. From one closet clean-out to hundreds of donations, from one idea about confidence to a room full of volunteers and younger girls, this project showed me what can happen when service becomes action.

About Me

I believe the best ideas are the ones you actually do something with.

Hi! I'm Emy Teitelbaum, a senior in high school and the founder of EmpowerHER Boutique. I created EmpowerHER during my junior year because I wanted to build something that went beyond simply collecting donations. I wanted to create an experience where younger students could choose clothes they genuinely loved, connect with people who cared about them, and leave feeling more confident than when they walked in.

What started as one event for girls has grown into something much bigger. After seeing the impact of the first boutique, I knew I didn't want it to be a one-time project. This year, I'm expanding the event to include boys, doubling our clothing donations and volunteer team, and introducing new programming focused on helping middle school students navigate anxiety and growing up.

For me, service is about more than giving something to someone. It's about listening, creating with a community, and turning an idea into something that can make people feel seen, supported, and excited to be there. EmpowerHER has taught me that even one idea can grow far beyond what you originally imagined when enough people believe in it.

See a need. Build an idea. Make it happen. ♡
